The Netherlands Antilles are a group of islands in the Caribbean that are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Originally discovered by Spanish explorers in the 1490s, the islands quickly came under the control of the Dutch West Indian Company, which used them as military outposts and trade bases. Though they were treated as hotly-contested trading and military assets among the English, French, and Dutch throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the Netherland Antilles soon became known as an unlikely pioneer of progressive government, first abolishing slavery in 1863 and then granting universal suffrage to its citizens in 1948.
Saint Martin was named after the Christian bishop Saint Martin of Tours by Christopher Columbus. Between 1648 and 1816, the French and Dutch struggled on-and-off for control of the island. By 1848, they had stopped fighting, and the French controlled twenty-one square miles to Denmark's sixteen. Today, both sides of Saint Martin are popular tourist destinations, and the island itself is a profoundly diverse place with heritage from Africa, France, Britain, and Denmark.
