Kauai is the fourth-largest and oldest of the Hawaiian Islands. One part of this six million year-old isle gets 460 inches of rain per year, making it one of the wettest spots on Earth. Located on the western side of Kauai, Waimea Canyon, often referred to as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, is ten miles long and three thousand feet deep. Nearby Waimea Beach boasts some of the best surfing waves in the world.
Discovered by Captain James Cook in 1778, Kauai had already distinguished itself from the rest of Hawaii by being the last island to submit to the rule of King Kamehameha, a native ruler who waged a military campaign in the 1790s to unite the islands and create the Kingdom of Hawaii. The local chieftain of Kauai, Kaumualii, marshaled his forces and resisted Kamehameha for over a decade, routing two major invasion attempts. In 1810, however, in an effort to prevent further bloodshed, Kaumualii surrendered and became Kamehameha's vassal.
