Phoenix lies in the middle of the Sonoran Desert. Naturalists will revel in the parched beauty of the South Mountain Wilderness Preserve, where saguaro cacti and Arizona agave grow unhindered and regal horned lizards flee from cactus wrens. The nearby Desert Botanical Gardens offer a tour of Sonoran flora in more domesticated environment, while the Apache Trail will lead determined hikers deep into the wild desert. Those willing to travel some distance may seek the Red Rocks in Sedona or perhaps even the cliffs of the Grand Canyon, which is a four-hour drive from Desert Arroyo.
For visitors more interested in culture, the Old Town Scottsdale Historic District is only twenty minutes away and features eclectic shopping, unconventional art galleries, and quirky eateries. The Heard Museum, founded in 1929, is renowned as one of the best places to learn about American Indian arts and culture through a series of stunning, exquisitely-detailed exhibitions. If you brought the kids along or just enjoy animals, the Phoenix Zoo is also a short car ride away.
The area around Desert Arroyo has no shortage of tasty eateries. Aunt Chilada's serves delicious Mexican fare, including award-winning salsa and a unique spiced pork dish, and has an adjoining Cantina where late-nighters can listen to mariachi bands while putting down delicious margaritas and top-shelf tequila. For something more American, the family-owned Rustler's Rooste has a distinctly Western frontier ambience, which it emphasizes with live country western music and dishes like rattlesnake appetizers.
Nello's Pizza is arguably the best pizza joint in Phoenix, and has maintained this reputation for over twenty years. Nello's offers everything from classic baked ziti to an original Portabello Arugula pizza topped with shaved parmesan and has locally-brewed Four Peaks beers on tap. If you're pining for seafood, the Salt Cellar Restaurant serves live Maine lobsters, Oysters Rockefeller, and turtle soup.
Phoenix is the United States' sixth-largest city and largest capitol city. Once the hunting and irrigation grounds of the Hohokam natives, the land upon which Phoenix is built saw very little human presence until the founding of the city itself in 1868. It remained nothing more than a dusty frontier town until its incorporation in 1881, after which it quickly became a Western railroad hub and was named capitol of Arizona in 1912.
Quickly outgrowing Tucson and Prescott, the former frontier town gradually morphed into a thriving metropolis with a dynamic history of prosperity, organized crime, and innovation. Today, Phoenix is the second fastest-growing metropolitan area in the United States and home to almost one-and-a-half million people. Visitors from all across the United States flock here to enjoy the beauty of the Sonoran Desert combined with the conveniences, attractions and culture of a major American city.
