Before the Hoover Dam was built in 1928, Las Vegas was a desolate frontier town in the heart of the Mojave Desert. Money was scarce and water was scarcer. Then the dam went up, World War II ended, and wealthy entrepreneurs and venture capitalists began looking for the next big thing. Las Vegas began its life in the American limelight as a desert retreat for Hollywood stars a la Palm Springs, but that began to change in the 1960s and 70s.
During the Civil Rights Movement and so-called American Cultural Revolution, Las Vegas morphed from an exclusive celebrity destination to a gambling and entertainment Mecca designed to appeal to every demographic and taste. Hotels and casinos started building up instead of out, engaging in an ongoing contest to outdo each other with exotic themes and unparalleled luxury. Then, in the 1990s, Sin City hopped on board the technological revolution, and its hotels and casinos reached a new height of spectacle. Today, Las Vegas is one of the most famous cities in the world and draws millions upon millions of visitors each year.
