Phoenix is the United States' sixth-largest city and the nation's most populous capital city. Once the hunting and irrigation grounds of the Hohokam natives, the land upon which Phoenix is built saw very little human presence until the founding of the city itself in 1868. It remained nothing more than a dusty frontier town until its incorporation in 1881, after which it quickly became a Western railroad hub and was named capitol of Arizona in 1912.
Quickly outgrowing Tucson and Prescott, the former frontier town gradually morphed into a thriving metropolis with a dynamic history of prosperity, organized crime, and innovation. Today, Phoenix is the second fastest-growing metropolitan area in the United States and home to almost one-and-a-half million people. Visitors from all across the United States flock here to enjoy the beauty of the Sonoran Desert combined with the conveniences, attractions and culture of a major American city.
