In a state full of world-famous attractions, Lake Tahoe still manages to land at the top of the list. Over a mile high and 1,600 feet deep, it is the largest alpine lake in North America and the second-deepest lake in the United States. Lake Tahoe is crystal clear, surrounded by tall mountains, and home to some of the best ski resorts and casinos in the country. It was formed by the geologic block fault that created the Carson Range.
The land around Lake Tahoe was once the home of the Washoe tribe of Native Americans. California and Nevada decided to split the lake between the two states when Nevada was granted statehood in 1864. The lake saw a brief stint as a potential gold mining spot, but quickly transitioned to the far more lucrative industry of tourism. It enjoyed a building boom after World War II and national attention when the 1960 Winter Olympics were held in Squaw Valley. Since then, it has become known as one of the most beautiful places to visit in North America, with fantastic skiing, glamorous casinos, and plenty of water activities in the summer.
